How long?
Start with the headline term, but do not stop there. Some warranties end earlier if another limit is reached.
Practical solar and battery information for Melbourne homes and businesses.
The simple rule: compare years + retained capacity + usage limit. Then check registration, internet and claim conditions for the exact battery model.
Australian manufacturer information checked 12 October 2026. This is a buyer comparison, not a substitute for the current warranty document.
Start with the headline term, but do not stop there. Some warranties end earlier if another limit is reached.
Look for the promised retained usable capacity at the end of the warranty period: commonly 60% or 70%, depending on product.
A cycle limit counts use. A throughput limit counts the total energy moved through the battery. Either can matter more than the number of years.
| Brand / system | Headline term | Capacity promise | Usage condition | Important catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | 10 years | 70% at 10 years | Unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup; other uses can be limited by 37.8 MWh aggregate throughput. | Internet connection and registration matter to Tesla's ability to provide the full ten-year warranty. | Enphase IQ Battery 5P | Up to 15 years / 6,000 cycles | >60% capacity | The warranty ends at the earlier applicable limit, so both time and discharged cycles matter. | Use the exact Australian IQ Battery warranty for the installed SKU and confirm ownership-transfer and connectivity requirements. Enphase Australia product warranty ↗ |
| Sigenergy SigenStor | 10 years | 70% usable energy | Current AU/NZ terms specify minimum throughput by battery module: 15.85 MWh for BAT 5.0 and 23.77 MWh for BAT 8.0. | Long-term internet disconnection can affect the full ten-year cover. The current terms also separately cover the Energy Controller for 10 years. Sigenergy AU/NZ warranty ↗ |
| GoodWe Lynx Home F G2 | 10-year product + performance warranty | 70% usable battery capacity | Minimum throughput varies with system size; for example the 6.4 kWh model lists 23.36 MWh. | The current terms require internet monitoring and place conditions on later battery expansion and compatible inverter use. GoodWe Australia warranty library ↗ |
| Fox ESS | Usually 10 years; some current families differ | Typically 70% for listed current families | Energy-throughput limits vary by exact battery family. The current CQ6 family is an example with a 12-year performance term. | Registration and connection to Fox ESS systems are part of the current warranty conditions. Always match the quote to the exact battery family. Fox ESS Australia warranties ↗ |
| SolarEdge Home Battery | 10 years | 70% | The usage condition is model-specific: current single-phase Home Battery terms can state unlimited cycles, while current three-phase terms use an energy-throughput limit. | Do not assume every SolarEdge Home Battery has identical performance-warranty wording. Check the exact single- or three-phase battery document. SolarEdge Australia warranty check ↗ |
| BYD Battery-Box HVS / HVM | 10 years | 70% usable energy | Minimum throughput varies by model; current Australian HVS/HVM terms use a time-or-throughput structure. | BYD is a battery platform, so also confirm the current approved inverter combination. The warranty can continue to a subsequent owner with proof of ownership under the current terms. BYD Battery-Box downloads ↗ |
| Sungrow SBR / SBH | 10-year battery headline | Check exact current warranty card | Sungrow publishes a 10-year battery warranty headline, but the detailed conditional terms should be matched to the exact SBR or SBH product supplied. | Ask the installer to attach the current Australian battery warranty document to the quote rather than relying on the headline alone. Sungrow Australia warranty terms ↗ |
| iStore Solar Battery | 10-year performance warranty headline | Check current product terms | Public Australian material states a 10-year performance warranty, but the exact retained-capacity and usage conditions should be confirmed from the current warranty supplied with the quote. | Treat the marketing headline as the starting point, not the complete warranty comparison. iStore support and warranty ↗ |
Terms can change by model, purchase date and installation date. “Current” here means the Australian information available when checked on 12 October 2026.
Tesla Powerwall: the current Australian warranty is ten years with 70% retained energy. For normal solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup it lists unlimited cycles; other application combinations can instead be subject to a 37.8 MWh throughput limit.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P: the headline is longer at up to fifteen years, but the warranty also uses a 6,000-cycle limit and a capacity-retention threshold. You therefore compare both time and use.
GoodWe, Sigenergy, Fox ESS and BYD: their current battery terms use model-specific throughput figures. A 30 kWh battery has a different total throughput allowance from a much smaller battery, so compare the exact configuration rather than one generic brand number.
Modern battery systems use remote monitoring and firmware updates for diagnostics, safety and support. Some current warranty terms explicitly connect full warranty coverage with maintaining internet access or registration.
That does not mean a brief internet outage automatically destroys your warranty. It means you should understand the manufacturer's actual condition and make sure the system is commissioned into an owner account you can access.
Sometimes the written manufacturer terms include labour, service rebates or normal freight; sometimes they do not, or only under an authorised claim process. This is one of the most important questions to ask because replacing a heavy battery module is not just a hardware transaction.
A longer warranty is useful, but it does not tell you whether the battery has the right inverter compatibility, output power, backup design or usable capacity for your home.
