Is this system architecture worth considering?
Enphase is architecturally different from every central-string-inverter system in this library. Each solar panel is paired with an IQ microinverter that converts DC to AC on the roof, while the IQ Gateway coordinates monitoring and the IQ Battery 5P is AC-coupled.
That can be attractive for modular panel-level design and retrofits, but a quote must include the supporting gateway, metering and backup hardware needed for the features being promised. Counting microinverters also matters: there is effectively one conversion unit per panel.
How is the system actually built?
Current Australian IQ8 products include IQ8AC, IQ8HC, IQ8X and IQ8P variants. The microinverter needs to be electrically matched to the selected module; do not assume the installer can use one IQ8 model beneath any panel.
IQ Battery 5P is an AC-coupled 5.0 kWh usable storage unit with embedded grid-forming microinverters. Enphase publishes a continuous output rating of 3.84 kW per 5P unit, so both battery count and power should be considered when sizing backup or large loads.
Backup requires compatible control hardware such as IQ System Controller 3 INT. A battery-only quote and a backup-capable quote are therefore not the same scope.
Product families worth knowing
| Product family | Role | Buyer check |
|---|---|---|
| IQ8AC / IQ8HC / IQ8X / IQ8P | Panel-level microinverters | Match exact microinverter to panel voltage/current and count one per module. |
| IQ Gateway | System communications and monitoring | Gateway model, internet connection and whether consumption CTs are included. |
| IQ Battery 5P | 5 kWh usable AC-coupled storage | Number of batteries, continuous/peak power and backup-controller requirement. |
| IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase | Single-/three-phase capable storage platform | Exact approved Australian phase configuration and System Controller design. |
| IQ System Controller 3 INT | Backup/microgrid control | Whether it is included and which home circuits/loads are protected. |
Compatibility, backup and future changes
Microinverter compatibility starts at the panel. Module voltage, current and power need to sit within the IQ model's supported range. The final bill of materials should therefore name both the panel and microinverter, not just ‘Enphase system’.
Because IQ Battery 5P is AC-coupled, it can be relevant for retrofits as well as new Enphase solar. That does not remove connection-approval, metering or backup-controller requirements.
Consumption monitoring is another scope item. The IQ Gateway can coordinate system data, but make sure the required current transformers are installed if you want whole-home import/export/load visibility.

Warranty, monitoring and support
Current Australian Enphase product pages publish 25-year limited warranties for IQ8 microinverters. The current IQ8 datasheet notes conditions including an internet-connected IQ Gateway. IQ Battery 5P is published with a 15-year limited warranty up to 6,000 cycles.
Gateway and controller equipment can have different warranty periods from the microinverters. Keep the owner account, array map, serials and commissioning records so individual panel/microinverter faults can be identified later.
Where does this architecture fit well?
- Roofs where panel-level conversion and monitoring are useful.
- Arrays split across many orientations where modular AC design can simplify string constraints.
- Existing solar or new systems where AC-coupled IQ Battery storage suits the retrofit strategy.
- Homeowners who value long microinverter warranty terms and accept more distributed rooftop electronics.
Another architecture can still be a better fit when the existing solar equipment is worth retaining, the preferred battery is incompatible, the backup requirement is simpler, or the extra ecosystem features do not justify their installed cost. Compare the system architectures ↗.
What should you check on the quote?
- Which IQ8 microinverter is matched to each panel and how many are supplied?
- Is IQ Gateway included, and are consumption CTs installed?
- How many IQ Battery 5P units are included and what continuous kW does that provide?
- Is IQ System Controller 3 INT included for backup?
- How are three-phase loads handled in the proposed configuration?
- Which warranty terms apply to microinverters, battery, gateway and controller separately?
Also confirm the exact model is currently approved for the proposed Australian/Victorian connection and that export-control or communications requirements are included where they apply. See the Victorian smart-inverter guide ↗.
Quick buyer questions
Does Enphase use a central solar inverter?
Not for an IQ microinverter PV system. Each panel has a microinverter converting DC to AC at module level, coordinated through the Enphase energy/monitoring platform.
Is IQ Battery 5P AC-coupled?
Yes. Enphase describes IQ Battery 5P as an all-in-one AC-coupled storage system with 5.0 kWh usable energy.
How long is the IQ8 warranty?
Current Australian IQ8 product pages publish a 25-year limited warranty, subject to the applicable terms and system conditions.
