Is this system architecture worth considering?

SHORT ANSWER

GoodWe is useful to compare when you want a broad choice of solar and storage architectures rather than one fixed all-in-one system. Its Australian range includes low-voltage and high-voltage hybrids, three-phase storage inverters, AC-coupled retrofit equipment, all-in-one ESA systems and several Lynx battery families.

That breadth is also the main reason to insist on exact model numbers. A quote that says only ‘GoodWe hybrid’ does not tell you the battery voltage class, phase, backup output, compatible storage, monitoring hardware or whether the design is intended for new solar or an existing array.

How is the system actually built?

For a new single-phase solar-and-battery system, GoodWe publishes products such as ES G2 and EHB. ES G2 is a low-voltage hybrid platform; EHB is a different single-phase hybrid family. Their battery options and electrical design are not interchangeable just because the badge is the same.

For three-phase homes, ET G2 is a current high-voltage hybrid pathway. GoodWe also publishes larger ET and ESA configurations, so the inverter power should be selected around the home, network approval and battery power requirement rather than simply choosing the largest catalogue model.

For an existing PV system, SBP G2 is a particularly important distinction: GoodWe describes it as an AC-coupled battery retrofit inverter. That can let a homeowner add storage without replacing a serviceable solar inverter, although the final design and backup arrangement still need site-specific engineering.

Compatibility, backup and future changes

Battery matching is central to a GoodWe design. The Australian product catalogue lists Lynx Home U as a low-voltage battery and Lynx F G2 as high voltage, while Lynx D G2 is a newer high-voltage platform compatible with selected GoodWe storage inverters and ESA systems.

GoodWe publishes battery-compatibility documents and updates them. Treat those documents as the authority for the quoted model and firmware rather than assuming every GoodWe battery works with every GoodWe hybrid inverter.

Backup is also configuration-specific. GoodWe advertises fast transfer on products such as ES G2 and SBP G2, but a transfer time does not tell you which circuits are connected, how much power is available, how long the battery lasts or whether three-phase loads can operate during an outage.

Warranty, monitoring and support

GoodWe publishes Australian product and support documentation, but warranty terms can differ by product family and promotion. Ask for the current Australian warranty PDF covering the exact inverter and battery on your proposal rather than relying on a brand-level ‘10 year’ statement.

Keep the inverter and battery serial numbers, SEMS or monitoring-owner access, commissioning records, electrical certificates and warranty documents. If storage is being retrofitted later, also keep the original PV inverter documentation so responsibility between the two systems is clear.

Where does this architecture fit well?

  • New solar plus storage where a conventional hybrid design suits the roof and switchboard.
  • Three-phase homes where ET G2 or another approved three-phase hybrid matches the loads and connection agreement.
  • Existing solar where an AC-coupled SBP G2 retrofit may preserve a worthwhile inverter.
  • Households wanting a matched GoodWe inverter-and-Lynx battery ecosystem without assuming every family is interchangeable.

Another architecture can still be a better fit when the existing solar equipment is worth retaining, the preferred battery is incompatible, the backup requirement is simpler, or the extra ecosystem features do not justify their installed cost. Compare the system architectures ↗.

What should you check on the quote?

  1. What is the exact inverter model, phase and AC rating?
  2. Is the battery low voltage or high voltage, and which exact Lynx or third-party model is approved?
  3. Is this a new hybrid design, an ESA integrated system or an SBP G2 AC-coupled retrofit?
  4. What backup circuits and continuous backup power are included?
  5. Which meter, communications device and SEMS monitoring functions are commissioned?
  6. What Australian warranty documents apply to both inverter and battery?

Also confirm the exact model is currently approved for the proposed Australian/Victorian connection and that export-control or communications requirements are included where they apply. See the Victorian smart-inverter guide ↗.

Quick buyer questions

Can GoodWe add a battery without replacing my existing solar inverter?

Potentially. GoodWe's SBP G2 is specifically positioned as an AC-coupled retrofit storage inverter. Whether that is preferable to replacing the existing inverter depends on its age, condition, phase, array and desired backup capability.

Are all GoodWe Lynx batteries compatible with all GoodWe inverters?

No. GoodWe publishes model-specific compatibility information. Voltage class and supported battery families differ, so the exact inverter and battery combination should be checked against the current list.

Does a GoodWe hybrid inverter automatically provide whole-home backup?

No. Backup capability depends on the inverter, battery, wiring, protected circuits and any additional switching or control equipment. A quote should describe the backup scope explicitly.
