Is this system architecture worth considering?

SHORT ANSWER

sonnenBatterie Evo is a fully integrated AC-coupled battery. It includes its own battery inverter and energy management rather than relying on the solar inverter to perform the battery conversion job, which makes it relevant to both existing-solar retrofits and new systems.

The current Australian Evo has 10 kWh usable storage. sonnen also publishes 5 kW continuous and 7 kW surge backup capability, but the circuits actually supported in a blackout still depend on the installation design.

How is the system actually built?

AC coupling means the solar inverter remains a distinct system component. For an existing home, that can avoid replacing a functioning PV inverter merely to add storage.

sonnen describes Evo as an integrated battery system with its own inverter and BMS. The quote should therefore make clear which solar inverter remains or is being installed separately, how consumption is measured and how backup isolation is wired.

Black Start is part of sonnen's published Evo backup concept, but blackout performance still depends on available battery energy, protected loads and the connected PV system.

Compatibility, backup and future changes

sonnen states that Evo is designed to pair with solar systems through AC coupling. That architectural flexibility does not remove the need to check phase arrangement, switchboard design, export control and backup wiring.

For a new installation, compare the extra AC conversion pathway with DC-coupled hybrid alternatives. For an existing installation, compare the value of keeping the existing inverter against the cost of a full hybrid replacement.

Internet connectivity supports monitoring and service functions, so confirm the owner account and communications setup at commissioning.

Warranty, monitoring and support

sonnen currently publishes a 10-year or 10,000-cycle warranty for sonnenBatterie Evo components in Australia, whichever threshold applies first under the warranty terms.

Keep the battery serial number, app ownership, installation records and warranty document. If an existing solar inverter remains, retain its separate warranty and commissioning records as well.

Where does this architecture fit well?

  • Existing solar where AC-coupled storage can preserve the installed PV inverter.
  • Homes wanting a fixed 10 kWh integrated battery size rather than a large modular stack.
  • Backup designs where 5 kW continuous and 7 kW surge ratings fit the selected circuits.
  • Owners prepared to maintain the monitoring and connectivity setup used by the system.

Another architecture can still be a better fit when the existing solar equipment is worth retaining, the preferred battery is incompatible, the backup requirement is simpler, or the extra ecosystem features do not justify their installed cost. Compare the system architectures ↗.

What should you check on the quote?

  1. Is this the current 10 kWh sonnenBatterie Evo?
  2. Which solar inverter will remain or be installed alongside it?
  3. Which circuits are included in backup?
  4. How do the 5 kW continuous and 7 kW surge ratings relate to my loads?
  5. Who creates the owner monitoring account?
  6. Which 10-year/10,000-cycle Australian warranty document will I receive?

Also confirm the exact model is currently approved for the proposed Australian/Victorian connection and that export-control or communications requirements are included where they apply. See the Victorian smart-inverter guide ↗.

Quick buyer questions

Can sonnenBatterie Evo be added to existing solar?

Potentially. Evo is AC-coupled, so it is designed to operate alongside a separate solar inverter. The existing system and switchboard still need site assessment.

How much usable storage does Evo have?

sonnen's current Australian Evo page lists 10 kWh usable capacity.

Does Evo include backup?

sonnen publishes 5 kW continuous and 7 kW surge backup capability. The installed backup circuits and real outage runtime remain design-specific.
