Is this system architecture worth considering?

SHORT ANSWER

FranklinWH is an AC-coupled home-storage architecture built around the aPower battery and aGate controller. That makes it particularly relevant when a homeowner already has a serviceable solar inverter and wants storage without automatically replacing the existing PV equipment.

The current Australian aPower X is a 15 kWh battery with 5 kW continuous output and a published 10 kW ten-second surge rating. Those figures are useful, but the whole system still depends on aGate, switchboard design, the existing or new solar inverter and the circuits selected for backup.

How is the system actually built?

Because aPower is AC-coupled, solar generation is converted by the solar inverter and the battery has its own power-conversion pathway. This can make retrofits straightforward, although energy may pass through more conversion stages than in a new DC-coupled hybrid design.

aGate is not just an app accessory. It is the energy-management and system-control layer, and the quote should show how it monitors the grid, coordinates storage and isolates the home for backup.

FranklinWH allows multiple aPower batteries per aGate. Expansion changes both total kWh and available power, so compare the proposed number of batteries rather than assuming one large capacity figure behaves like a single unit.

Compatibility, backup and future changes

AC coupling means FranklinWH can coexist with many solar-inverter arrangements, but that does not make every existing installation a simple drop-in job. Switchboard space, phase configuration, export controls and backup wiring still need assessment.

For a new solar installation, compare FranklinWH's AC-coupled approach with a DC-coupled hybrid alternative. The decision is architectural rather than a simple efficiency or brand contest.

If large motor loads or air conditioning are expected during outages, ask the installer to show how the continuous and short-duration power ratings relate to those starting currents.

Warranty, monitoring and support

FranklinWH's current Australia and New Zealand limited warranty lists 12 years for aPower and aGate. For the 15 kWh aPower X, the performance warranty uses a 60 MWh aggregate throughput limit and 70% retained-capacity condition.

The warranty applies subject to its installation and authorised-channel conditions. Keep the aPower and aGate serial numbers, commissioning records and owner account details with the warranty document.

Where does this architecture fit well?

  • Existing solar where retaining the installed PV inverter is attractive.
  • Homes wanting a dedicated AC-coupled battery rather than replacing the solar conversion architecture.
  • Backup designs where surge capability is explicitly checked against important household loads.
  • Larger storage plans where multiple aPower units are deliberately designed rather than assumed.

Another architecture can still be a better fit when the existing solar equipment is worth retaining, the preferred battery is incompatible, the backup requirement is simpler, or the extra ecosystem features do not justify their installed cost. Compare the system architectures ↗.

What should you check on the quote?

  1. Is the quote for the current 15 kWh aPower X?
  2. How many aPower units are included?
  3. Is aGate included and what exactly does it control?
  4. How will my existing or new solar inverter integrate with the battery?
  5. Which circuits and loads will operate in backup?
  6. Who registers the 12-year Australian warranty and gives me the owner account?

Also confirm the exact model is currently approved for the proposed Australian/Victorian connection and that export-control or communications requirements are included where they apply. See the Victorian smart-inverter guide ↗.

Quick buyer questions

Does FranklinWH require replacing my solar inverter?

Not necessarily. FranklinWH is AC-coupled, so it can be designed alongside an existing compatible solar system. Site wiring and network requirements still need checking.

How large is the current Australian aPower X?

FranklinWH currently lists a 15 kWh aPower X for Australia, with 5 kW continuous output and a 10 kW ten-second surge rating.

What is the current Australian warranty?

The current Australia/New Zealand limited warranty lists 12 years for aPower and aGate, with throughput and retained-capacity conditions applying to the battery.
