Starting points for Brunswick homeowners
Merri-bek's Brunswick Community Battery project describes a 500 kWh battery at 797 Sydney Road and its intended community-energy model. For homeowners, the useful question is how community-level energy projects differ from your own rooftop generation, electricity contract and optional household storage.
This guide is an introduction to the questions that might apply locally, not a statement that every property in Brunswick has the same roof or electricity requirements.

Recorded solar activity in postcode 3056
As at 31 August 2026, Clean Energy Regulator records show 1,829 solar installation events and 11.9 MW of recorded rated solar capacity in postcode 3056.
- Recorded installations
- 1,829 installation events
- Recorded capacity
- 11.9 MW
- Average recorded capacity
- 6.5 kW per installation event
- Older recorded cohort
- 31.4% from 2015 or earlier
- 2026 recorded installations
- 72 (provisional)
The CER counts certificate-backed installation events, including new systems, upgrades and stand-alone systems. It is not a count of unique homes. Postcode 3056 may also cover places beyond Brunswick, so these figures are postcode-level context rather than a statistic about every Brunswick property. The older-cohort share describes when events were recorded; it does not prove that the original equipment is still on a roof or needs replacement.
Understand what the Brunswick community battery does and what it doesn't
The council's community battery can help manage electricity at a neighbourhood scale. It isn't a personal battery attached to every nearby household, and it doesn't establish whether your own home will benefit from installing storage. Ask your electricity retailer how any relevant local arrangement works, and evaluate a household battery separately using usable capacity, your tariff and realistic charging opportunities.
Questions worth asking
- Do I have a specific offer or arrangement involving a community battery?
- How is that different from installing an eligible household battery?
- Does the cost comparison assume full battery charging every day?
Treat shared roofs and established building layouts individually
Before requesting an installation, establish the actual usable roof faces, shading, safe electrical routes and any shared-property permissions that apply. Council information about neighbourhood infrastructure cannot establish a particular roof's generation. If other residents own or use the roof, identify who may authorise installation and access for future maintenance.
Questions worth asking
- Who controls the proposed roof space and approves the installation?
- What shade and panel-layout assumptions support the estimate?
- Is future roof access covered in the proposal?
Check council-supported solar alongside national and Victorian incentives
Merri-bek publishes separate low-income home-energy assistance and council-supported solar information. Check whether applications are open and whether your household qualifies; council funding and federal battery STCs are different arrangements and should never be silently added to a quote. Compare the total written cost after only those incentives that actually apply to you.
Questions worth asking
- Which council program is genuinely open to this household?
- Has the retailer itemised any assumed incentive separately?
- What changes in the quote if the household does not qualify?
